Kendall and Gigi wear matching ones, Sienna Miller throws hers on post-gym, and Kate Moss relies on her satin number to pay tribute to David Bowie. In short, the bomber jacket isthe cover-up worth relegating your winter coats into storage for.
The classic streetwear piece has seen a resurge of popularity thanks to cult brand Vetements, headed up by Demna Gvasalia, who has also taken the helm at Balenciaga after the departure of Alexander Wang. Bombers in khaki, orange and black (often with luminous inner linings) are the label’s bread-and-butter, along with other voluminous, structured outerwear.
On the other side of the pond in New York, bombers have long been the uniform of rapper-come-designer Kanye West, who had Alpha Industries jackets printed with ‘Yeezus tour’ for his 2014 show dates. Said jackets were passed onto his Kardashian family members, and what Kendall Jenner wears, many are eager to pick up on.
Jenner and model friend Gigi Hadid have been spotted ‘twinning’ around New York, as they nip from the gym to model castings and lunch in matching black and khaki bombers, respectively.
Model Miranda Kerr, meanwhile, relies on hers for that all-important exit from LAX airport in front of waiting paps. Perched delicately on her shoulders, the cocoon-shape provides the perfect frame for her svelte frame and the skin-tight clothes hugging it.
Elsewhere, the SS16 catwalks were awash with bombers as Elie Saab, Loewe and Emilio Pucci dabbled in the athleisure trend, and streetwear veterans Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone continued to revamp the classic. Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger were also on hand to tick the preppy box.
Such an influx of designers has meant that new faces, and not only models, have been experimenting with the transitional cover-up. Actresses Lily Collins and Liberty Ross toted embroidered bombers to Stella McCartney’s Fall 2016 presentation, and designer Jasmine Guinness was spotted wearing a fetching silk red one during the LC:M presentations.
Good news for those hovering on the fence: everyone can wear one. The luxe fabrics of those stocked by Acne Studios and Stella McCartney mean that there is an entry point for every consumer. Simply throw on with jeans, a tee and trainers at the weekend, or use it to add a sporty flourish to plain above-the-knee dresses.
